Choose eSIM if

You want mobile data ready before your transfer, hotel check-in or Grab ride.

Your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.

You would rather avoid an airport SIM counter after a long flight.

Choose local SIM if

Your phone does not support eSIM, or you want counter help in Thailand.

You want to compare current AIS or dtac tourist plans in person.

You are comfortable registering with passport and SIM package details.

The short answer

For most first-time visitors, an eSIM is the lowest-friction way to land in Thailand with working maps, hotel messages and transfer instructions.

A local tourist SIM can still be a better fit if you want a physical SIM, airport counter support, or a current AIS/dtac offer that clearly beats the eSIM plan you are looking at.

We do not publish Saily plan prices here because eSIM prices, data allowances and fair-use rules change. Use the Saily page for the current Thailand offer before payment.

Our partner pick: Saily

Saily is our Thailand eSIM partner pick for travelers who want to set up data before departure and avoid hunting for a SIM counter after landing.

Saily comes from the Nord Security product family, which is one reason we are comfortable featuring it as the simple eSIM path for tourists.

Partner disclosure: the Saily links on this page are sponsored affiliate links. We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you; Saily handles checkout, plan rules and support.

Local SIM alternative: AIS and dtac

AIS currently lists Lucky Tourist SIM options with eSIM purchase links, including 1, 5, 8, 15, 30 and 60 day packages. Its terms say VAT is extra and plan terms can change.

dtac currently lists Happy Tourist 299 eSIM for 8 days with 15 GB at max speed and Happy Tourist 599 eSIM for 15 days with 30 GB at max speed.

dtac's registration page says prepaid tourist SIM users need registration and should bring passport, SIM card and SIM package. It lists airport service points including BKK, DMK, Phuket, Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi.

Other eSIM brands

Airalo and Holafly are also well-known eSIM options for Thailand. They may be the better choice if their current plan, app experience or support policy fits your trip better.

We work with Saily, so that is the partner link we include here. The fair move is still to compare the current plan page before buying.

Before you fly

Install the eSIM while you still have reliable Wi-Fi, then follow the provider's activation instructions exactly.

Keep your transfer voucher, hotel address and pickup point saved offline in case data activation takes a few minutes after landing.

If you need hotspot, top-up, voice calls or SMS, check the current provider terms before buying. eSIM data plans do not all handle those features the same way.

FAQ

Thailand eSIM questions

Does eSIM work in Thailand?

Yes, if your phone is unlocked, supports eSIM and the provider's Thailand plan covers your trip. Always check the current provider page before buying.

Is eSIM better than buying a SIM at the airport?

eSIM is usually easier if you want data ready before your transfer. An airport SIM can be better if you want counter help, a physical SIM or a current AIS/dtac tourist offer.

Do I need a passport for a Thailand tourist SIM?

For local prepaid tourist SIM registration, yes. Our SIM page notes dtac guidance to bring your passport, SIM card and SIM package for registration.

Should I install my eSIM before flying?

Yes. Install it on Wi-Fi before departure, then follow the provider's activation steps. This reduces airport friction after immigration and baggage claim.

Is Saily cheaper than AIS or dtac?

We do not claim that. Saily plan prices change, and local AIS/dtac tourist offers change too. Compare the live Saily page with current local provider terms before payment.

Are Airalo and Holafly good for Thailand?

They can be good options. We mention them because travelers compare them often, but we do not link to them here; our partner relationship is with Saily.

Can I use hotspot or top up with a Thailand eSIM?

Check the current provider terms before buying. Hotspot, top-up, voice calls and SMS can vary by provider and plan.
